Welcome to another installment of WIPpet Wednesday, the blog hop where writers share excerpts from their works in progress (WIPs). Since every WIPpet must have something to do with the date, and since today is the 18th, here are nine paragraphs from “Stolen by Magic” (1+8=9). Click here to see other WIPpeteers’ WIPpets.
Some background: Gwynn, bard of the Seelie Court, has just tried to escort lost human Laurel Cabot through the portal in the faerie realm and back to her world. Unfortunately, the portal won’t work. I should also add the Beltane is the name of his horse. 🙂
“It should’ve worked.” Something flashed in his eyes, like a realization dawning on him. A curse escaped his lips.
“Hop on,” he said, quickly mounting Beltane and offering his hand.
“Where are we going?”
“To Vanarra, to get some answers.”
“Vanarra?” The name was all too familiar—I’d heard Granny mention her adventure there more than once. “The city, home to the Seelie Court?”
“That would be the one. “ He sounded surprised. I guessed most humans weren’t familiar with faerie realm geography—but most humans weren’t witches, from a long line of magical adventurers.
“What’s in Vanarra?” I asked.
“Home,” he grunted. “Home—and answers.”
He gave Beltane a firm kick, and we were off at a canter, heading toward Vanarra.
Midweek ROW80 check-in…

That snippet would have been both confusing and hilarious if you’d let us think Beltane was some random dude. 🙂
LOL! Yeah, I thought some explanation was in order. 🙂
You are off at a canter your own self!! Congratulations
Thanks! 🙂
loved the snippet! and congrats on finishing the second draft
Thanks, Fallon!
Like the snippet and good job on the word count!!
Thanks, Cindy!
And they’re off on their adventure! Tally-ho!!! 🙂 Exciting.
Yes–and they have no idea what sort of adventures await them on their journey. 🙂
Your main character seems fun and from a very fun family. I think Gwynn might underestimate her and pay for it. 😉
Congrats on finishing the second draft! Keep up the awesome.
Yes, her family is very interesting. Actually, the second book in the series follows her sister. So I’m getting to know their family fairly well. 🙂
Thanks, Gloria!
Very interesting since we don’t even know what the questions are!
Thanks!
Congrats on second draft! After reading this snippet, I’m pretty excited to see what you share with us, next. Quest for answers into the heart of Fairy…. Awesome. 😀
Congrats on your progress!
Nice excerpt, with lots of action. One minor suggestion — you might want to consider renaming the horse, given how important Beltane is in Celtic mythology. Being steeped in it myself, the name struck me as something equivalent to “Easter Sunday” 🙂
Congratulations on finishing your second draft and your progress!
I really enjoyed your snippet, and I’m guessing that’s not the only way Laurel will be surprising Gwynn…
Glad you told us ahead of time who/what Beltane was. Nice scene. I agree with the others, I think Gwynn is in for many more surprises.
Yeah, I thought some explanation was necessary. 🙂 Thanks!
Congrats on your progress! Looking forward to reading more of this – very intriguing.
